1. PPTP VPN
PPTP can be abbreviated as point to point transfer protocol. This is one of the most widely uased software among VPN’s. It allows remote users to access and connect to VPN network using their existing Internet connection and then log on to the VPN using password authentication. Once the PPTP connection is set uo one can utliizes a series of control messages to maintain VPN connections. It does not require any additonal software or hardware. As for security it supports encrytion, authentication and packet filtering. The drawback of PPTN is that it chooses a single standard for authentication and encryption.
2. Site-to-site VPN
Site-to-site VPN is just the same as PPTN along with extra features, only thing which varies is that there is no “dedicated” line in use. It has the feature of connecting various terminals of same organization into the network of VPN. There are two types of VPN. 1. Intranet based and 2. Extranet based. In intranet based the connection is set up woth all remote sites of the same organization, in extranet based it also includes the site to which your organizxation as close relationship. Variation from PPTn, the encryption and decryption is perfomed at both the ends of the router which can either be hardware of software.
3. L2TP VPN
L2TP is layer 2 tunneling protocol which is extension of PPP VPN. Hence it consists of the features of PPP VPN software. It was devolped by Microsoft and Cisco. It does not provide encryption facility. It is uses as a part of he delivery of services by ISPs.It does not provide any confidentiality by itself so it relies on an encryption protocol that it passes within the tunnel to provide privacy.
4. IP sec VPN
IP sec is a well trusted protocol which sets up a tunnel from the remote site into your central site. It evaluate the IPSec features that improve VPN scalability and fault tolerance, such as dead peer detection and control plane. It also adds services to IPSec VPNs, including voice and multicast. As the name specified it is mainly designed for IP traffic. Drawbacks of this VPN software is it is expensive and time consuming client installations. So,VPN Client – VPN Client are little disappointed.
5. SSL VPN
SSl stands for secure socket layer virtual private network, it can be used with a standard Web browser.it provides remote users with access to Web applications, client/server applications and internal network connections. It is known for its secure communications mechanism for data and other information transmitted between two endpoints. The major advantage of SSL is that it doesn’t need any software installed because it uses the web browser as the client application.
6. MPLS VPN
MPLS is Multi-Protocol Label Switching, it give network engineers the flexibility to transport and route several types of network traffic using the technologies of a MPLS backbone. This MPLS has 3 types of VPN- pseudowire, layer2, layer3. MPLS based VPNs reduce customer networking complexity, costs and totally do away with the requirement of in-house technical work force. These systems are essentially ISP-tuned VPNs, here two or more sites are connected to form a VPN using the same ISP. It is not easy to set up, hence resulting in expensiveness.
7. Hybrid VPN
As thename describes, Hybrid VPN is a combination of SSL and IPSec & also other types of VPN types. IPsec intercepts traffic at the network level, and encrypts and transports it at the network level. Hybrid VPN servers are able to accept connections from multiple types of VPN clients. They offer higher flexibility at both client and server levels and so they are not available as Free VPN – Free VPN
