[How to] Access 25GB Cloud Storage Google Drive for Ubuntu?

Google has just launched Google Drive, which is going to be next generation Google’s Cloud Storage Services. While currently Google Drive is only available for PC, Mac and Android Smartphone, but Google has promised to bring the upgrade for iPhone and iPad versions as well later in the future. While, one of the important and unseen Operating System which they missed out is Google Drive for Ubuntu, currently there are no updates from Google regarding it, but still it can be accessed in Ubuntu by just following some of the simple steps in Nautilus. For this purpose, we will be using Google Docs Fs PPA project by Luca Invernizzi, which is in another way used to connect our Google Docs to our Google Drive service. However, this method is originally posted by OMGUbuntu which gives you a temperary method to access GDrive on your favorite Ubuntu machine.

But when you are trying to access GDrive in Ubuntu, there are so many restriction and limitations. However, you will still be able to access and store all your contents to the cloud storage area, but you won’t be able to use the auto sync feature along with some more features inside it. We will also update some more tips and guides on accessing all the features, but till then you can use the following steps in Ubuntu 11.10.

Step 1: Download the complete Package which is available at here from Luca Invernizzi.

Step 2: Add the following package

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:invernizzi/google-docs-fs
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install google-docs-fs

Step 3: Once you complete the installation steps then just LogOut and Login again to your favorite Ubuntu Desktop.

Step 4: Open “Nautilus” and then its time to Create a New Folder in your “Home” folder as “Drive”.

Step 5: Now Access “Terminal” and type the following command

gmount Drive username@gmail.com

(replace the username with your Google Account detail)

Step 6: After this, you will be able to see a prompt for Password, just give your Google account Password(Don’t worry, its safe) to complete the steps

Step 7: Finally you must be able to see Google Drive as a Virtual Drive which will provide you initial storage space of upto 25GB.
